Congratulations to Athens Debate for having a record-breaking 2019-2020 debate season. Athens Debate won nearly every major debate tournament - with historic wins at the California State Championships and the National Championships.

Take a look at the Athens Debate results from this past debate season. One thing is clear: Athens Debate is by far the most successful speech and debate academy in the Bay Area - their success is consistent, deep, and record-breaking.

Top Results from the 2019-2020 Year:

  • California State Championship: 1st Place in LD Debate
  • National Championships: 2nd Place in LD Debate and 1st Place in Elementary Debate
  • Novice Championships: 1st Place in LD Debate
  • Stanford: 1st Place in JV LD
  • UC Berkeley: 1st Seed in JV LD, 2nd Speaker in Varsity LD, 3rd Place in JV LD
  • Online Middle School Championships: 1st and 2nd Place in LD Debate
  • "End of Semester Championships": 1st Place in Varsity LD & 1st Place in Novice LD
  • MVLA Shutdown Showdown: 2nd Place in Varsity LD
  • College Preparatory School: 1st Place in JV LD
  • Santa Clara: 1st Place in Novice LD

2020 National Championships:

  • 12 of the Top 16 finishers in LD Debate were Athens Debaters; 6 of the Top 8 were Athens; 3 of the Top 4 were Athens. Athens Debate completely dominated the National Championships.
  • 1st Place Elementary SPAR Debate (Evelyn Williams)
  • 2nd Place in LD (Ben Freda-Eskenazi)
  • 2nd Place Elementary SPAR Debate (Rishi Shirol)
  • 4 of the Top 6 finishers in Elementary SPAR Debate were Athens Debaters
  • 3rd Place in LD (Arin Magesh)
  • 4th Place in LD (Karen Glenn)
  • 5th Place in LD (Zaee Shah)
  • 6th Place in LD (Navya Rawal)
  • 7th Place in LD (Shreyas Kapavarapu)
  • Octafinalists: Yesh Rao, Diya Mehta, Anik Chobe, Victoria Adint Eric Shi, Anya Gurudatt
  • 4th Place Elementary SPAR Debate (Anshuman Arun)
  • 6th Place Elementary SPAR Debate (Oscar Seem)
  • 3rd Place Elementary Impromptu (Rishi Shirol)

California State Championships:

  • Yesh Rao won 1st Place in LD debate and bringing home the California State Championship! Zaee Shah won 3rd Place in LD Debate! And, Vinayak Sarkar won 4th Place in LD Debate!
  • In SPAR debate, Karen Glenn won 2nd Place and Zaee Shah won 3rd place!
  • Vinayak Sarkar won 1st Speaker, Julian Bauer won 2nd Speaker, and Mira Haldar won 3rd Speaker!
  • Athens Debate set a record by having 20 of the 32 elimination qualifiers for LD Debate. Athens represented 63% of the double-octafinal round; 12 of the 16 octafinal round participants accounting for 75%, 3 of the 4 semi-finalists also accounting for 75% of that round; and then ultimately won the championship in Finals.
    • In total Athens took home the following places for LD Debate: 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21th, 22th, 23th, 24th in LD Debate;
    • Speaker awards: 1st Speaker (Vinayak Sarkar), 2nd Speaker (Julian Bauer), 3rd Speaker (Mira Haldar), 5th Speaker (Aarnav Agarwal); 6th Speaker (Arin Magesh)
    • Double Octafinalists: Arin Magesh, Kyleen Liao, Navya Rawal, Nora Choi, Navon Soussan, Mira Haldar, Anvita Koneru, Aarnav Agarwal
    • Octafinals: Noah Babel, Charlotte Ng, Shreyas Kavarapu, Maxwell Webb, Julian Baeur, Ben Freda-Eskenazi, Andrew Chou-Belden
    • Quarterfinals: Victoria Adint, Karen Glenn
    • Semifinals: Zaee and Vinayak
    • Finals: Yesh Rao
  • In SPAR debate, Athens had 7 of the 25 quarterfinalists; and then 5 of the 12 semifinalists; and ultimately took home 2nd (Karen) and 3rd (Zaee). Ben, Noah, and Victoria reached semi-finals! Charlotte Ng reached quarterfinals.
  • In Impromptu, Tamanna Suria was a semi-finalist in Impromptu Speaking (out of a pool of 140 speakers)! Tamanna is an incredible speaker and her showing in Impromptu made us all so proud (she's also a phenomenal LD debater).
  • Nishchay Jasuja won 5th Place in Congressional Debate!

"End of Semester Championships"

  • In Varsity LD Debate, Athens won 1st (Pooja Agarwal), 2nd (Rohit Dayanand), 5th (Grayce Alpers), 6th Vinayak Sarkar, 9th (Arjun Godbole)
  • In Middle School LD: Athens won 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th
    • Every single qualifier for elimination rounds was an Athens Debate student!
    • Co-Champions for Middle School LD Debate: Anik Chobe, Aarnav Agrawal. Arin Magesh, Aryaman Kukal, Diya Mehta, Julian Bauer, Navya Rawal, Victoria Adint, Yesh Rao, Zayne Abraham

UC Berkeley:

  • 1st Seed in JV LD (Rohit Dayanand) and 5th Place in JV LD
  • 2nd Speaker in Varsity LD (Reina Pradhan)
  • 3rd Place in JV LD (Trisha Bhima)
  • Athens Debate had 6 students reach elimination rounds. Athens had the 1st Seed in JV LD debate, the 2nd speaker in Varsity LD debate, the 3rd place debater in JV LD debate, and several students making it to elimination rounds.
  • Octafinals in JV LD (Victoria Adint)
  • Double-octafinals in JV LD (Gordy Sun, Dhruv Raghavan, and Veda Yama for making it to Double-octafinals in JV LD)
  • Athens had the most debaters in JV LD elimination rounds!

Stanford University:

  • 1st Place Champion in JV LD (Veda Yama)
  • Quarterfinals in JV LD (Pooja Agarwal)
  • Octafinals in JV LD (Grayce Alpers, Yesh Rao, and Victoria Adint)
  • Double Octafinals (Gordy Sun)
  • 3rd Speaker (Yesh Rao)
  • 5th Speaker (Veda Yama)
  • 10th Speaker (Grayce Alpers)

MVLA Shutdown Showdown:

  • Yesh Rao won 2nd Place in Varsity LD debate
  • Veda Yama won 3rd Place in Varsity LD debate
  • Dhruv Raghavan won 5th Place in Varsity LD debate
  • ohit Dayanand won 6th Place in Varsity LD debate

Online Middle School Championships:

  • Shreyas Kapavarapu won 1st Place in Lincoln Douglas Debate
  • Yesh Rao won 2nd Place and 1st Speaker in Lincoln Douglas Debate
  • Ben Freda-Eskenazi won 4th Place in Lincoln Douglas Debate
  • Athens Debate "closed out" the top spots at this tournament

Idaho Invitational:

  • Yesh Rao won 1st Place in Lincoln Douglas Debate!
  • Rohit Dayanand won 5th Place and 3rd Speaker in Lincoln Douglas Debate!

JV / Novice Championships:

  • Yesh Rao won 1st Place in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate!
  • Veda Yama won 2nd Speaker and 5th Place in JV Lincoln Douglas
  • Shreyas Kapavarapu won 3rd Place in Novice Lincoln Douglas
  • Ben Freda-Eskenazi won 5th Place in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate
  • Zaee Shah won 6th Place in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate

College Preparatory School:

  • 1st Place Champion in JV LD (Pooja Agarwal)
  • Yesh Rao - 6-0 undefeated
  • Ben Freda-Eskenazi - 4-2 in prelims

Santa Clara:

  • Karen Glenn won 1st Place and the Novice LD Debate Championship! Karen went 5-0 undefeated in prelims
  • Arushi Agarwal for getting 5th Place in Varsity LD Debate after making it to quarter-finals! Very impressive as a 9th grader.
  • Julian Bauer went undefeated 5-0 in prelims and earned the #2 seed for the tournament. He finished 5th place. Julian also earned the 4th best Speaker award for the tournament.
  • Andrew Chou-Belden went 4-1 in prelims. He started the elimination rounds as the 25th seed, but won a significant upset to then take on the #8 seed. He finished 6th place.
  • Noah Babel went undefeated 5-0 in prelims and earned the #7 seed for the tournament. He finished 9th place.
  • Nora Choi went 4-1 in prelims and made it to the eliminations.
  • Grayce Alpers went 4-1 in prelims and made it to eliminations!
  • Charlotte Ng, Maxwell Webb, Anya Gurudatt, Ben Freda-Eskenazi, Mira Haldar, Maurya Palusa, Navon Soussan, Veda Yama achieved won 3-2 records for the tournament.
  • Yesh Rao and Zaee Shah for going 4-2 in Varsity LD.
  • Veda Yama won 6th Speaker

Panther Invitational:

  • Athens Debate won 1st Place in JV Lincoln Douglas Debate (Rohit Dayanand)
  • In Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Athens took home 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, 4th place and 5th place; we had all four of the 6-0 undefeated debaters at the tournament; four 5-1 debaters; and four 4-2 debaters; in addition to won the Top 5 spots, Athens had 10 of the Top 18 spots.

Stephen Stewart:

  • Victoria Adint won 2nd Place in Novice LD at the Stephen Stewart Invitational in September
  • Grayce Alpers won 2nd Speaker in Novice LD at the Stephen Stewart Invitational in September
  • Yesh Rao won 7th place in Varsity LD Debate as an eight grader!

Stratford Invitational:

  • Sophia Tian won 1st Seed and 1st Speaker the Stratford Invitational Tournament in October
  • Yesh Rao won 2nd Seed and 3rd Speaker the Stratford Invitational Tournament in October
