Tuesday’s MegaMillions lottery jackpot is up to $1 billion, the third-largest prize in lottery history.
Are you planning to buy a ticket? If so, do you know what to do if you win?
According to the Oregon Lottery website, the first thing you should do is celebrate! But the second, importantly, is to sign the back of your ticket.
For prizes of less than $50,000, winners can take their signed ticket into an Oregon Lottery Prize Center or dropbox, or send it in by mail. For smaller prizes -- $600 or less -- winners can go directly into an official lottery retailer.
For prizes of $50,000 or greater, the lottery has a phone line for winners to call: 800-766-6789.
How do you get paid?
If you win big, the state offers two options for payment: a lump sum or an annuity.
An annuity is an annual payment of the full prize amount over the course of 30 years. Winners can designate a beneficiary to receive the remaining payments if the winner should die before all payments are made.
The lump sum option is exactly what it sounds like – a one-time payment. The one-time payment is roughly half the jackpot total, but you get all your money right away. State and federal taxes apply to both options.
Can you stay anonymous and still claim the money?
Not in Oregon. There are a handful of states where winners can remain anonymous, but Oregon is not one of them.
The drawing is scheduled for 7:59 p.m. Pacific time on Tuesday, Jan. 10. You can purchase a jackpot ticket in Oregon up until 7 p.m. You can view game details and past winners on the Oregon Lottery website.
