As the president and CEO of The San Diego Foundation, I often tell people that I have one of the best jobs in our county. That warm feeling was recently reinforced when I was asked to speak to MANA de San Diego’s graduating Hermanitas, a group of inspiring Latina women, as well as their families and mentors.
The opportunity served as a reminder of the hope that exists within our youth, as well as the significance of the communities that support them. The COVID-19 pandemic may have impacted high school graduations, but it should not change the way we celebrate and honor those who have accomplished so much. Here are the words I shared with the Hermanitas, which I hope will resonate with the thousands of young San Diego graduates preparing to embark on a new adventure.
To our students’ families and mentors — thank you for all that you have done and continue to do to ensure San Diego’s bright young minds have a boundless future. Your commitment of time, talent and treasure is not an investment that ends today. Yours is a gift to the many multiples of 18 years that these young individuals will provide to amazing careers, working within their communities and paying forward all that has been given to them. Your commitment goes so far beyond these students we celebrate this year. You have positively influenced the future for every person who comes into a relationship with these amazing students, people for whom you will never know their names and will never meet. That is simply awesome. Thank you!
To our graduating students — while I want you to enjoy your soon-to-be college experiences, I hope you never forget those you have lifted you up and have seen you through your graduation. My one hope for all of you is that no matter what you study and if college is a two-year, four-year or longer experience, that you will eventually return to San Diego to make your own lifelong roots in this community. Why? Because we need you! You are exactly the type of future leaders who we desperately need to ensure that San Diego County will eventually become a place where every single resident has the opportunity to prosper, the opportunity to thrive, and perhaps most importantly of all, feel like they belong right here.
Thirty-five years ago, I was like you, preparing to start college and enter a new chapter in my life.
I still remember the words of an Albion College president who finished every speech with the same charge to the student body. I think he did so because he wanted to make sure the students never forgot these words.
It worked. I think about what he said to the students every single day.
While I will only have this one chance to share his words with you, I hope you will remember this simple charge and carry it with you throughout your college experience and beyond. He finished every talk by saying to all of us: “Remember students that your best days have yet to be. Your best days have yet to be.”
I am confident that everything provided to you by your families, mentors and communities has given you the strongest possible foundation for a future with countless possibilities. All of us at The San Diego Foundation are so proud of your achievements and we will be watching your future success and waiting for you to come back to make the San Diego County of all of our dreams come true for all of the young people who will follow you.
Felicidades and congratulations.
