Three hundred and fifty-three seniors, as of May 31, have now officially graduated from Lakewood High School, whether they walked across the Civic stage with only family members and administration in attendance, or had their name announced in the commencement ceremony video, or both. It was an unusual and unprecedented graduation, but the accomplishment and pride remains the same!
The Class of 2020 celebrated their milestone with a first-ever Senior Parade the morning of May 31. More than 200 cars, festooned with signs and plenty of purple and gold, made their way around the city to the cheers and support of friends, family, and community members. Later on the 31st, families could gather to watch the video ceremony.
The video unfolded as would any traditional commencement, with slight twists. Senior musicians played "Pomp and Circumstance" via Zoom to open the ceremony. Closing was a poem by Jack Wynn and a piece performed by senior cellist Grace Gill that was composed by junior Arturo Orso-Giacone. In between were speeches by Principal Mark Walter, Superintendent Mike Barnes, Board President Emma Petrie Barcelona, and three student speakers: Valedictorian Evan Bell, Yusra Abdi, and Cameron Levis.
During the ceremony, Principal Walter recognized two special student groups including those six students joining the military and the 35 students wearing Hawthorne Medals for finishing their high school careers with a 4.0 GPA or better.
Although their senior did not turn out the way anyone could have envisioned, the Class of 2020 rose to the occasion and joined the ranks of proud Ranger graduates! Congratulations to the Class of 2020!
