Don Haddad: Congratulations, Class of 2020 - Longmont Times-Call

Dear St. Vrain Valley 2020 Graduates and Community,

This week, we celebrate our more than 2,000 graduates as they walk across a stage to receive their St. Vrain Valley Schools diploma. This year is particularly meaningful for our students, teachers, staff and community as we have seen these students overcome great challenges and achieve incredible results. The education that our children are receiving today and the problems they are facing are much more significant than anything we ever experienced, and I share this after 35 years of watching numerous classes graduate and different generations evolve.

The Class of 2020 has everything going for them because they have their families, teachers and community behind them. They’ve had experiences with education that are unparalleled, and along the way, they’ve had to overcome significant adversity. Adversity is the first step in advancing, it can be used to motivate and inspire — it can make us a better version of ourselves. Everybody is going to experience challenges in their life, and it is not whether we can prevent them from happening, it’s about how we respond.

Education today is an incredibly complex experience for our children. In years past we would read a chapter, prepare for our exam, respond, and receive our grade. Now, learning in our classrooms is about whether we can empathize a problem, ideate a solution, prototype it, and test it. Can we work together in teams, communicate what we are thinking and have the perseverance to stick with it until we achieve a solution? Can we predict what might be coming next and when it changes, can we change accordingly?

This is how learning has shifted and this is how the St. Vrain Valley School District is preparing our students to be the future leaders who will advance our world. Today, we are calling on the scientists who graduated from our public schools to solve this major health crisis. They didn’t plan it, but we are counting on them to find solutions. This is what public education has equipped them to do, and this is what our students – our future doctors, armed service members, engineers, teachers, economists and many others – will be prepared to do.

The Class of 2020 has not only had a rigorous, high-quality educational experience, they have shown incredible capacity to overcome adversity, to problem-solve and to innovate. We see it in the results they’ve achieved, in their academic results, their music and performing arts achievements, their athletic championships and most importantly, in their level of citizenship and the compassion that they share for humanity. These are the things that will propel this new generation and they will lead in ways we never could, and they will solve problems we could not solve — I am 100 percent confident about this.

Beyond the applause, smiles and tears that we will share on July 25, as the Class of 2020 celebrates their high school graduation, we will continue to recognize this generation because we are going to hear about them, we are going to read about them and we are going to thank them for what they end up doing for our community and beyond. I feel very privileged and honored to have been able to serve this graduating class, and I am incredibly proud of all that they have accomplished. I wish our graduates the very best in life, and I am deeply appreciative of our families, teachers, staff and community who have supported them along the way.

Sincerely,

Don Haddad, Ed.D.

Superintendent, St. Vrain Valley Schools
