Editorial: Congratulations to historic Class of 2020 - Opinion - fosters.com - Dover, NH - Foster's Daily Democrat

It’s been a graduation season like no other on the Seacoast. And graduates in the Class of 2020 are also like no others.

For the rest of your lives, when you tell people you were a member of the Class of 2020, they will nod knowingly, remembering well the experience you endured and overcame as a high school senior. None of us will ever forget your graduation season.

In other years, people have graduated with honors. This year, no matter your GPA, you are all graduating with respect – respect for the work you’d done and the achievements you’d made up until the clouds of coronavirus concern began to darken March, one by one raining on your senior year, your spring season, your prom, your Senior Week traditions, your graduation ceremony. But more so, you have our respect for the work you’ve done and the achievements you’ve accomplished under the most difficult constraints. Most of all, it is respect for the attitude with which you confronted the challenges that faced you in completing your high school degrees; for your perseverance through the loss of the company of your friends, teachers and peers; and your resiliency as heart-breaking cancellation after heart-breaking cancellation rolled in.

You’ve taken the "Grow Through What You Go Through" mantra to heart and risen above the disappointment to be stronger as individuals and as a class.

You’ve shown us that a crisis is a terrible thing to waste, using your untimely loss of those last few golden months of high school that you had earned to bring greater good into the world, supporting your friends, keeping your studies up from home, and volunteering and donating to those who were hit harder by the pandemic than you were.

The collective soul of the Class of 2020 shines bright this weekend as many of our local high schools are celebrating in virtual or short in-person ceremonies as best they can given the safety restrictions imposed to stop the spread of coronavirus. Your communities more than any other year have celebrated their graduating seniors, with lawn signs, with banners hung downtown, with businesses bedecked in school colors, and with parades, actual parades. Not many people get a parade in their honor, you know. But you did.

You’ve shown us all how to rise above even the deepest once-in-a-lifetime disappointments and move forward to be stronger for having gone through the daunting experience. You’ve shown us how to innovate in an unprecedented situation and how to accept that it’s really not all about us.

As Traip Academy Principal John Drisko said Friday at his school’s ceremony, "Your moment is so much greater than your graduation."

You’ve made history, Class of 2020, and you will make more, so much more. Now, more than maybe any previous June, the world is yours to change, to improve and to shape with the strength you’ve solidified in the past few months. Stay as strong, resilient, smart, hopeful and altruistic as you’ve proven yourselves to be. The world needs you and the lessons you can teach us. Your commencement is the beginning of great and hopeful change for you, and for all of us.

Congratulations, Seacoast Class of 2020.
