Congratulations to the Toledo Boomers men’s basketball team. They are the 2019-2020 2A state champions after a convincing 58-48 victory over Western Christian Saturday night in Pendleton. That state title was the first ever for any Toledo team sport.
The Boomers, who were 26-3 for the season and 12-0 in league play, dominated their opponents in state tournament games, beating Sheridan 72-46 in the first round, followed by a 68-38 win over Bandon, a 69-46 victory over Knappa and the final win over Western Christian in the championship game.
The Boomers were not only the top-ranked offensive team in the state, but also the most dominant defensive team in the state tournament, holding their four opponents to an average of 44.5 points per game during their four wins.
Head coach Eddie Townsend and his staff of Andy Vogel, Bart Rothenberger, Jerrod Eshleman and Vaughn Marchant deserve much of the credit for the team’s successful season.
Three of the Boomers were honored for their play in the tournament. Conner Marchant was a unanimous first all-tournament team selection, and Clifton Howard and Mason McAlpine were second team selections.
And finally, a special thanks to the 500-plus fans who made the six-hour trip to Pendleton and for their support throughout the tournament. They were treated to a historic performance by a team that we will all be talking about for many years.
Great performance, Boomers. You made us all proud.
