Top football honorees

The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame will celebrate the nation’s top defensive backs during the 38th anniversary of the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award banquet on Tuesday at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

The banquet will formally honor Air Force defensive back Trey Taylor, who was named the Jim Thorpe Award winner in December as the best defensive back in the country. The awards banquet also will feature Howard University’s Kenny Gallop Jr. as the winner of the second annual Aeneas Williams Award, given to the top defensive back of a Division I football player at a historically black-designated institution.

The Thorpe award is named after the accomplished football player from Oklahoma who also was the first-ever Native American to win an Olympic gold medal (winning two in 1912 in track and field events). Members of Thorpe’s family as well as Aeneas and Tracy Williams will attend the banquet to honor the new recipients.

A public cocktail reception begins at 6 p.m. followed by the 7 p.m. banquet. For tickets go to oklahomasportshalloffame.org
