IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. (WROC)— Congratulations to Melissa Hutto, our latest Golden Apple Award winner. Hutto teaches science at East Irondequoit Middle School. She has taught there for the past 10 years, but has been teaching science for 30.
“She comes in everyday, starts fresh, big smile on her face and ready to make things fun for kids,” says Principal Max Zeller.
7th grade student Elsa Nolan says, “She makes learning a lot of fun. Even when it’s tricky, she finds a way to make it easier and makes everybody understand even if she has to pull everyone aside and do it their own way.”
7th grader Berrin Sel adds, “Her energy is always great when we come in the classroom. She’s always greeting us and always makes jokes during class. It makes a really fun learning environment in class and is always willing to help students in need. She’s a pretty great teacher.”
This is Mrs. Hutto’s last full year of teaching. She will be retiring in the fall and already knows what she will miss most about the job. “The kids absolutely. They make me happy. I just love their energy, their curiosity, and they are just amazing. That’s why I do it,” says Hutto.
She can also be tough when she has to be. “Yes, I am a 4th degree blackbelt in taekwondo and that’s why they’re so good,” she adds. It’s a sense of humor that resonates with both her students and colleagues.
“She’s amazing. She’s a bright light for all teachers and students,” says Zeller.
