Tom Wilson is 23 hits richer after the NHL conducted a “comprehensive audit of the hits statistic in every game this season.”
The league made the announcement in a PR release on social media, Wednesday morning.
Statistical Update
As part of the ongoing effort to provide the most accurate statistical accounting possible of NHL games, the League has performed a comprehensive audit of the hits statistic in every game this season and made appropriate adjustments. The newly updated season totals are reflected on NHL.com and in the League’s statistical releases as of today.
Wilson now has 151 hits on the season, good for 14th best in the NHL. His previous total was 128. The player who saw the largest increase in the top 20 was former Capital Garnet Hathaway, netting an additional 43 hits.
Alex Ovechkin saw his hits total rise 17, from 73 to 90.
The Athletic’s Michael Russo spoke to Russell Levine, the NHL’s vice president of stats and information, who revealed that the league has been auditing various statistics and applying additional layers of review for several years now. While there are rules that govern what a hit is, there still remains a level of subjectivity that can sneak into results. With the update, total hits around the league rose 8.7 per game, making the number consistent with years prior.
“As we looked at the hitting numbers this year, we didn’t feel they accurately reflected what was happening on the ice,” Levine said. “So we took a deeper look and decided to audit what we’d seen, similar to how we’ve audited other stats… The difference here is we went back and looked to the start of the season and adjusted accordingly.”
After the update, Jeremy Lauzon leads the league in hits with 229 — 50 more than Cal Clutterbuck who sits second.
