Ryan Mason paid tribute to our Under-18s in his pre-Crystal Palace press conference on Friday afternoon after our youngsters triumphed in the Premier League Cup on Thursday night.
Following in the footsteps of our Under-17s, who lifted their version of the trophy with a 5-1 win over Nottingham Forest a fortnight ago, our Under-18s prevailed with a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa in the showpiece at Villa Park to cap an unprecedented cup double for our Academy.
Having fallen behind to the Villans through Rory Wilson's opener on 17 minutes, Stuart Lewis' young charges were level before the break with a fine finish from Rio Kyerematen. Jamie Donley then turned the game on its head just after the hour mark with a clinical finish to round off a superb counter-attacking move before Kyerematen doubled his tally with our third on 66 minutes to secure the silverware.
Having graduated our Academy as a player before later earning his first coaching experience within the set-up, Ryan knows our youth system, staff and players well, so was delighted to see them take the honours in the West Midlands. And so, as he sat down to speak to members of the media on Friday as our Men's First Team prepares for the visit of Palace, he was quick to highlight our youngsters' success.
"Just before we start, I just want to congratulate our Under-18s, our Academy, as they won the under-18 Premier League Cup last night," Ryan said. "That backed the Under-17s up (after their cup win). That's important and it's good for the Football Club."
