Saskatchewan’s neighbours to the west went to the polls on Monday, and while official results won’t be posted until June 8, the United Conservative Party (UCP) has secured a majority government. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and Leader of the Opposition Carla Beck each congratulated Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and the UCP on the victory.

“I look forward to the continued cooperation and collaboration between our two provinces as we address the challenges facing Western Canada and build a prosperous future for this generation and the next,” Moe said in a message posted on Twitter.

In the lead-up to the election, Moe said he and his Saskatchewan Party were “a bit more aligned” with Smith and the UCP than with the Rachel Notley-led NDP. Some policy, like the proposed creation of the Saskatchewan Revenue Agency, has been pulled directly from the Alberta provincial playbook. The Saskatchewan First Act and a new marshals service were also trial ballooned in Alberta.

A combative approach when dealing with Ottawa and a willingness to fight things like the proposed clean energy standards are currently uniting party planks between the Saskatchewan Party and the UCP.

While a considerable amount of daylight exists between the UCP and the Saskatchewan NDP, Beck also took to Twitter with good tidings.

“I’d like to congratulate Premier Smith on her re-election. Where common ground can be found, I look forward to working together to advance the interests of families in Western Canada,” Beck said.

Beck also congratulated the Alberta NDP leader on the campaign she ran and the seats picked up by the party.

“Thank you Rachel Notley and your team for your continued leadership on the national stage,” Beck tweeted.

While final results won’t be known for more than a week, the majority government formed by the UCP did not come without some losses.

While Smith and the UCP were able to retain government despite several controversies — Smith’s comparing people who took COVID-19 vaccines to the followers of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party; breaking the province’s conflict of interest law; promising “amnesty” for people charged for violating public health orders during the pandemic — the party lost several seats, many of which were held by cabinet ministers.

In 2019 the UCP won 63 seats. As of Tuesday morning, they were set to win 49. In Alberta, 44 seats are required to form a majority.

The NDP are projected to win 38 seats, up from 24 in 2019.

When asked if the result in Alberta might mean an early election called in Saskatchewan, a government spokeswoman said in an email that would not be the case.

“There are no plans to change the timeline outlined in legislation for the next general election, which is set for Oct. 28, 2024,” the spokeswoman said.
