Congratulations to the Toledo High School boys basketball team and head coach Eddie Townsend for their big win last weekend. The Boomers claimed top honors at the 2A Boys Basketball State Championship in Pendleton. Not only did they win the tournament, it was the first-ever boys basketball state championship in the school’s history. Well done!
This came on the heels of another state champion performance for Toledo when, on Feb. 29, Boomer Trenton Hutchison earned his way to a number-one finish at the state wrestling tournament.
And this success will likely continue next year. The boys basketball team will lose just two seniors this year. Granted, the two who will graduate in the spring — Conner Marchant and Clifton Howard — were a key part of the team’s stellar season, but the seeds have been planned for future success under Townsend’s guidance. And Hutchison has one more year of high school left, so he will most assuredly help develop future wrestlers under the direction of coach Tony Blomstrom.
We’d say it was a pretty successful winter sports season for Toledo athletes and their coaches. They obviously put in a lot of hard work and persevered. Their success was certainly not handed to them — they earned every bit of it.
It’s exciting for players, coaches and their fans to be part of a winning season like this, but we strongly believe sports is about a whole lot more than just the final numbers on the scoreboard. Not to take away from that aspect of it, but sports also serves to build character in the athletes who are involved, and much of what they “win” by taking part has nothing to do with the score. We’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating: we appreciate our coaches who help to instill those qualities in the athletes they oversee. It truly can be life-changing for the young people and incredibly satisfying for the coaches themselves.
So again, congratulations to Toledo High, as well as all other Lincoln County athletes. You are learning lessons through your hard work that will serve you well for the rest of your lives.
