NFL Mock Drafts: ‘Congratulations, New England,’ you get a franchise QB - MassLive.com

The New England Patriots’ ruinous 2023 season comes with some good news: They’re in line to get one of the top quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft, according to the most recent batch of mock drafts.

As Week 14 of the NFL season wraps up, the Patriots are currently tucked neatly into the No. 2 overall pick of this year’s draft. It just so happens that this year’s draft has two superstar draft prospects expected to come off the board early in the form of USC’s Caleb Williams and North Carolina’s Drake Maye.

But which quarterback will be the better pro? Is it Williams, the dynamic playmaker who won the Heisman in 2022? Or is it Maye, who has a prototypical NFL build and a cannon for an arm?

Right now, the pundits seem split, though the consensus right now seems to be leaning toward the Patriots getting Maye at No. 2 after Williams goes No. 1.

As one mock draft put it, “Congratulations, New England.” The team is finally in a position to land a franchise quarterback, regardless of who gets picked first.

But which one will the Patriots go with? Here’s what the experts are saying in their most recent projection:

Josh Edwards, CBS Sports - Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina

Analysis: “Congratulations, New England, you have finally done it. You lost enough games to be in a position to select one of the perceived top quarterback prospects. The worst place a bad team can find itself is in the middle of the draft order so while it sounds sarcastic, it is a genuine sentiment.”

Eddie Brown, San Diego Union-Tribute - Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina

Analysis: “The post-Tom Brady era hasn’t been kind to the Patriots or Bill Belichick. This could be the first time Belichick drafts inside the Top-5 as a head coach. Maye’s prototypical size (6-foot-4, 230 pounds) and elite arm talent will cause some to question whether Williams is really the top QB in this draft class.”

Dalton Miller, Pro Football Network - Caleb Williams, QB, USC

Analysis: “The decision between Caleb Williams and Drake Maye will likely come down to preference. If Bill Belichick returns for 2024, which player would he prefer? Until the selection is made, we likely won’t know.”

Ryan Wilson, CBS Sports - Caleb Williams, QB, USC

Analysis: “Who knows what fate awaits Bill Belichick, but what seems much more certain is that the 2024 Patriots starting quarterback currently isn’t on the roster. If the organization has two (or three) quarterbacks graded in a similar range, it could remain at No. 2. That said, if New England thinks Caleb Williams is special -- and a head above the other passers in this class -- then trading up could be on the table.”

Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz, USA TODAY - Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina

Analysis: “The 6-4, 230-pound Maye is essentially everything that Mac Jones isn’t: a rifle-armed passer with the mobility to extend plays and pick up first downs as a runner.”

Luke Easterling, Sports Illustrated - Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina

Analysis: “No team in the NFL needs anything as badly as the Patriots need a quality quarterback. The post-Tom Brady era has become a desolate wasteland for New England under center, and any of this year’s top rookies would give them an immediate upgrade. Similar to Williams, Maye’s 2023 season was a roller-coaster, but he’s still got the tools to be a difference-maker at the next level.”

Curt Popejoy, Draftwire - Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina

Analysis: “I still think when it’s all said and done Drake Maye ends up the top quarterback off the board and an easy pick for the Patriots.”

Trevor Sikkema, Pro Football Focus - Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina

Analysis: “The Patriots are completely lost on offense, with no identity and no quarterback to build around. Maye has established himself as one of the top gunslingers in college football over the past two years. He made 38 big-time throws for an 8.7% big-time throw rate last season and has 32 such throws this year at a 7.5% clip. In both seasons, he recorded a sub-2.0% turnover-worthy play rate. Maye brings pro-level ability as a passer in all situations.”

Joe Broback, Pro Football Network - Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina

Analysis: “Maye’s shown that he can operate at a high level even when he’s not getting the best supporting cast. He’ll walk into a similar situation with New England, but he’s shown the ability to work with that adversity.”

Vinnie Iyer, Sporting News - Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina

Analysis: “The Patriots should be waving the white flag on 2021 first-rounder Mac Jones after his poor play this season and benching him for Bailey Zappe in Week 12. They need to dive right into a rookie upgrade. With his arm, accuracy and athleticism, Maye has developed into a bigger, much better version of the Commanders’ Sam Howell, another one-time Tar Heels QB.”
