A Hawai'i Congresswoman congratulated Sasha Colby on her Drag Race win in front of the House of Representatives, lauding her for representing Native Hawaiian culture on drag’s biggest stage.
Rep. Jill Tokuda took the floor on Thursday afternoon to congratulate “Sasha Kekauoha, more famously known as Sasha Colby.” Tokuda expressed her pride that “a fellow Windward girl” — referring to the Windward Coast in Oahu — “hailing from the homestead of Waimanalo” had won season 15 of the hit reality competition show.
“From the very beginning of the competition, Sasha, a seasoned drag legend, drew upon her ethnic heritage and childhood trauma as sources of inspiration for her performances,” Tokuda said. She praised Colby for authentically representing Native Hawaiian culture by talking about “the legacy she’s building” for the state, and for talking openly about being māhū.
Tokuda explained that “in ancient Hawaiian days, māhū were considered extraordinary individuals of male and female spirit who brought their healing powers to Oahu from Tahiti.” In the modern day, Tokuda said, trans people are revered in Hawaiian society.
Colby has previously discussed being māhū both on the show and in interviews. In a January interview with Them, the drag queen discussed her identity and how she was initially introduced to the term when she was younger.
Sasha Colby on the Pressure of Entering *Drag Race* as a Legend
After a 20-year-long drag career, the iconic queen has entered the workroom.
“I feel like māhū is very much like the word queer,” she said. “We’ve taken back queer as not a derogatory term, like we would have thought of when people would say it in the ’80s, let’s say. Now, being queer is a badge of honor for us, and it’s a lovely blanket that covers all of our experiences. Which is what māhū is.”
Colby added that she was “glad” that “we’re allowed to really say our culture and our language, and people respect it and spread it.”
Tokuda concluded her brief speech by noting that Colby’s win was particularly poignant given the nationwide onslaught of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. “Amidst ongoing attacks on our LGBTQ+ rights that particularly target trans people and drag queens, her win is not only well deserved, it gives us all hope,” Tokuda said. “Congratulations to Sasha Colby — you are a leader, you are a proud māhū, and every drag queen's favorite drag queen.”
