To say the 2022-23 season for the Sandusky girls basketball team was a success seems like a bit of an understatement.
During the regular season, the Wolves finished a perfect 12-0 in the Greater Thumb East Conference, going undefeated in conference play in back-to-back seasons for the first time ever.
“Anytime we win the GTC title, I feel it is a big accomplishment, because there are so many good teams, programs and coaches,” said Sandusky head coach Al DeMott. “To win the GTC East outright and go undefeated in the GTC East two years in a row is huge. Our girls set a goal to do it this year and I am really proud and happy for our girls that they were able to achieve it. Our girls are small size-wise, but are all unselfish and have huge hearts and great desire. They play great team basketball and just want to win every time they step on the court.”
From there, the Wolves breezed through districts, defeating Capac in the semifinals, 62-14, and Memphis in the finals, 49-25.
It was the 28th district title in program history.
After that, Sandusky returned to its home court for regionals, where they held off Cass City in the finals, 49-44, to win its first regional title since 1999.
“We’ve won them before, so for me, its huge,” said Wolves head coach Al DeMott. “But for these kids, they’ve worked so hard and they’re so coachable, so they deserve it. I love them and I’ve just been enjoying every minute of coaching them. I was afraid tonight would be the last time ever with them. Thank God I get to keep coaching them for another game because they’re just awesome kids to work with, the whole team is.”
The Wolves were led this season by a trio of seniors, Morgan Taege, Ally Jansen and Brooke Jansen, who all received first team All-Conference and All-County honors.
Taege was a unanimous first team All-Conference selection and was also named first team All-Thumb by the Thumb Sportswriters Association.
Another highlight of the season, of course was Al DeMott setting the state record for most all-time wins in girls basketball history.
He passed Detroit Country Day’s Frank Orlando, who finished his career with 797 victories.
After going 23-4 this season, DeMott’s all-time record sits at 813-208 and he is the first girls basketball coach in the state to win 800 games.
