I would like to first congratulate Joy Young and Robert Cianciulli for being elected to serve on the Berkeley Heights Board of Education. While I would have been honored and thrilled to be a part of the Board, I know that these two individuals have the character, experience, and demeanor to bring important and necessary changes to our school district.
I learned a lot from running for a Board seat. I met and befriended many wonderful residents of our town and deepened my understanding of all the educational issues that matter to Berkeley Heights families. I am so thankful for that experience.
Now that the election has ended, I would also like to share some hard lessons I learned from my run for the Board. To start, I was personally singled out when a document was falsified and used as the basis for fraudulent claims against me. An avalanche of unfounded and cruel personal attacks followed, including outright lies. Several residents posted that I silenced voters, hindered first amendment rights, and shamed OPRA requests. These accusations were perpetuated and supported on social media and TapInto, including by a certain candidate. I intentionally chose not to address them during the campaign, wishing instead to keep the attention on our positive and focused message. However, this experience made me question the civility of our local election process.
In reflection, I would like to call on Berkeley Heights residents to continue to passionately support your candidates. People who run for these positions should be encouraged and commended for their volunteerism. However, the negative campaigning and spreading of lies, especially on online social platforms, has to end.
Also, please be mindful of those candidates who try to elevate themselves at the expense of others. These are not the people that we want representing our interests.
To paraphrase a recent quote: we may be opponents, but we are not enemies. We are all earnest citizens of Berkeley Heights and more importantly, we are neighbors. We do not have to agree on policies, but I think we can all agree that we should treat our neighbors with respect and kindness.
