It is hard work to run for public office. So, thank you to all those who ran for election in the recent primary. Once filing papers were submitted in June, candidates found themselves going beyond typical campaigning efforts in this year of social distancing due to COVID-19, spending countless hours on questionnaires, surveys, interviews and public forums, all to help inform voters. All the information, candidate statements and lively discourse is a worthy endeavor.
However, some candidates did not obtain the necessary votes to progress to the November election. To those, we extend a special wish of gratitude. It is difficult to make yourself vulnerable during a campaign and to an emotional letdown when votes do not meet expectations. We hope candidates for state office, City Council or School Committee who were not victorious in the primary or fall short in November will continue to stay involved in their community by serving on a board, a commission or volunteering in some way.
To all the poll workers who ensured that our voting locations were safe for residents to exercise their right to vote, thank you. To greeters outside with hand sanitizer, to those who sat behind the plexiglass partitions with masks on all day until 8 p.m. validating voter eligibility and passing out the ballots and stylist pens, thank you.
While we await the final tally from the Rhode Island Board of Elections, the efforts of all municipal employees should also not go without praise.
In the end, to the thousands of Aquidneck Islanders who cast their vote at a polling location or by mail, keep up the commitment to being an informed voter.
The November election is a mere seven weeks away, so let’s not ease up on that commitment and elect officials who are dedicated to their mission.
