The TL Cares cash giveaway program gave out another $1,000 to a lucky subscriber this past week, with Shavertown native Denise Culp becoming the latest winner.
For Culp, like many other winners throughout the program, the news came as a shock.
“I was totally surprised,” Culp said while she stopped by the Times Leader office on Tuesday to collect her $1,000 winnings. “I couldn’t imagine why the Times Leader was at my house … I was ecstatic.”
Culp was entered into the TL Cares program via her Times Leader subscription, a subscription she says she’s held for over 30 years. Times Leader subscribers are automatically entered into the TL Cares program, making a subscription the easiest way to cash in and win.
One of Culp’s favorite sections of the paper became popular in her house as a result of her son, a high school athlete.
“When my son was in high school, he ran cross country so I would love to check in on the local sports,” Culp said. “I still read the local sports, plus I like the opinion page and some of the political stories.”
As part of her big win, Culp was also able to choose a non-profit organization for the Times Leader to donate an additional $1,000 to; her choice, the Greater Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, had a personal meaning behind it.
“My dad has Alzheimer’s,” she explained. “I’m hoping it will help them find treatments and cures.”
As for her own $1,000, Culp’s already got her mind set on a good way to use that money.
“My daughter is getting married in June, so I’ll probably use some of it for that,” Culp said. “Then maybe, I’ll spend some on myself.”
