Sometimes you have to look closely to see genius at work, when others around you see only the opposite.
City hall has recently taken a beating from much of the francophone media, illustrated by a blistering La Presse editorial on Wednesday.
It accused Mayor Valérie Plante of being “out of touch” with Montrealers and “deaf” to their frustrations by pushing ahead with pedestrian corridors, construction projects, a bike expressway and reduced parking — despite a pandemic that’s changed everyone’s current priorities.
The editorial lists some of Quebec’s biggest talk show hosts and opinion-makers who have recently attacked city hall — names like Guy A. Lepage, host of Tout le monde en parle, and star TV journalist Stéphan Bureau.
As well, legendary La Presse cartoonist Serge Chapleau showed Plante being pulled off a pedestal, like a tumbling statue of Sir John A.
But I don’t agree. Sorry, Quebec media, I think you misunderstand the secret genius of Mayor Plante’s strategy.
