Winona Senior High School was full of celebration Friday morning, as the 2023 Winona Education Association Teacher of the Year was announced.
WINONA, MINN. (WXOW) -- Winona Senior High School was full of celebration Friday morning, as the 2023 Winona Education Association Teacher of the Year was announced.
Scott Halverson, an educator of 35 years, was recognized for all the things he does within the Winona Area Public School (WAPS) District.
"Scott goes above and beyond without a doubt," Foundation for WAPS Executive Director Luke Merchlewitz said. "He is there early to meet with his students for questions, help and support. He's absolutely there in the classroom but it's also what happens outside after the students leave."
Scott has been involved with many Winhawks sports over the years, including basketball, softball and baseball. He's also served on numerous committees within the district and is a founding member of the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.
"He helps with any capacity that the school needs," Scott's wife and WAPS psychologist Amy Halverson said. "He chaperones band trips. He has pulled the band wagon for many years behind the truck. So he's always one to volunteer and jump in when needed."
Scott has been nominated for this award a few different times and he says it's the students that have helped make his 31 years in Winona special.
"That was something I noticed when I first moved here," Scott said. "There's something special about our students here. Especially in the past it's been a really tight community. They're good people, they're willing to work hard and you get a chance to know the community."
Though he spends most of his time teaching math, Scott says he's learned just as much while in this position.
"There's no doubt that working in the schools makes you a better parent and being a parent makes you a better teacher. That works hand in hand," Scott said. "Certainly, working with colleagues makes you a better spouse, makes you a better family member."
He said being named this year's Teacher of the Year is an opportunity to thank his colleagues and to be an advocate for his fellow Winhawks.
Scott will be honored during American Education Week, at the Winona Education Association's banquet. That takes place November 14, at 4 p.m. at the American Legion.
