It’s said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And according to the folks of D. G. Yuengling & Son Brewing Company, it seems like one of the world’s biggest brewing companies is paying them quite a compliment.
On Jan. 18, Anheuser-Busch shared a video on Twitter announcing their new updated company logo. The post said that the “updated logo and visual identity” was selected in order to capture both the company’s heritage and optimism for the future - “a future filled with more cheers!”
The font on the new logo is similar to the font used on the logo of Budweiser, branded as the King of Beers and one of Anheuser-Busch’s most popular products. And their eagle is now facing to the right instead of the left.
But both of those changes also happened to make the new logo look awfully similar to one familiar with America’s oldest brewery.
Yuengling Brewing Company was quick to offer a toast of their own, with a post on Jan. 19 on their own Twitter account sharing the video again. And in their post, the Pottsville-based brewing company noted the similarity of Anheuser-Busch’s new logo to their own logo.
“Cool new Eagle,” the post read. “We’re flattered. Yuengling, America’s Oldest Brewery, established 1829.”
It’s worth noting, of course, that both companies have had similar logos for a long time, dating back to their founding. Yuengling was even founded in 1829 under the name Eagle Brewery. Anheuser-Busch originally took form as E. Anheuser & Co. when Eberhard Anheuser became owner of the Bavarian Brewing Company in St. Louis.
Both companies were founded by German immigrants, and both used eagles in their logos, which was not an uncommon thing for beers of that era. But not all breweries survived Prohibition, or would go on to last for more than a century since.
This is also not the first time Yuengling has suggested that Anheuser-Busch may be less-than-original. It was only a few weeks ago that Yuengling accused the larger company of infringing on their trademark with similar slogans for a new line of light beer.
