The Maui News sports reporter Robert Collias was honored as Hawaii Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association on Tuesday — and congratulations are in order!
Rob was unsurprisingly gracious on social media in receiving this award, but it must be said that this is a recognition well earned.
Rob is an asset to The Maui News and to all of Maui County. Readers have long known he is a productive and tenacious reporter, and this NSMA honor confirms it.
But what should not be overlooked is how he does that work — in particular, his eagerness to talk and to learn. Rob is a curious reporter who asks good questions and then genuinely listens to the answers.
And that goes for more than the subjects of interviews. I know from personal experience as his co-worker that he is always up for a discussion of journalism as a craft. We’ve had many conversations on how to lift The Maui News to greater heights, and I became a better journalist and better person for it. I hope he feels the same way.
I’m proud to call Rob a colleague and a NewsGuild union brother. I’m also lucky to call him a friend.
There can be no doubt that Rob is more than worthy of this addition to his list of awards — and just as true is that he isn’t done yet. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
