From the Publishe: Dan Jensen, congratulations upon retirement - Grosse Pointe News (subscription)

After 44 years on the job, Grosse Pointe Farms Public Safety Director Dan Jensen announced plans to retire at the end of the year.

In his retirement, he joins past “chiefs” I have had the honor to work with since hiring in at the Grosse Pointe News in 1988. They include Director Jensen’s predecessor, Bob Ferber; Dick Caretti and Bruce Kennedy in the Park and City, respectively; Jack Patterson in the Woods and Dan Healy and Gary Mitchell in the Shores.

Other honorable mentions include Dave Hiller, Chief Caretti’s replacement in the Park; John Schulte and Steve Poloni, who both served in the Park and Shores; Bruce Smith in the Woods and Al “Skip” Fincham from the City and later city administrator in the Woods.

I am sure I am missing some of the greats in law enforcement in the Pointes. We have been very fortunate to have able leaders in our public safety departments, and our low and declining crime rates are testament to their service.

I first met Detective Jensen when I was a reporter covering the police beat in the five Pointes. He and fellow detective Mike McCarthy were always very approachable and helpful and fun to hang out with.

Lt. Jensen was a natural pick to fill Director Ferber’s role upon his retirement. Where Director Ferber was brusk with just two words to sum up every negative situation, Director Jensen was always more thoughtful and forthcoming.

As an officer and director, Dan Jensen’s career spans generations. I am sure as a patrolman he gave many a Grosse Pointe resident who had one too many “pops” or a wayward teenager a ride home. Those were more laidback, innocent times.

As the chief and director, he has seen a more serious, professional class of young recruits eager to make felony arrests. He reminds me of the elder sheriff in “The Sons of Katie” who counsels his eager deputy to not go charging into the scene but to go in more “leisure like.”

That’s not to say Director Jensen couldn’t get his hackles up, and I and the paper have been the target of his anger on more than one occasion. But that comes with the job.

We would like to wish Director Jensen a well-earned retirement with his wife, Laurie, and their many grand- and great-grandchildren.

Hope to see you around the Pointes, Dan.

Congratulations in the Woods

We would like to congratulate Frank Schulte for being named city administrator in the Woods.

Mr. Schulte began his municipal career over 40 years ago picking up trash in Grosse Pointe. Over 35 years in the City, he worked his way up to supervisor before taking the job as public services director in the Woods six years ago.

It’s a rags to riches story, or in this case, rubbish to administrator.
