The graduates of the East Haven High School Class of 2021 may not have expected their career as Yellowjackets to end in pandemic, but from the spirit shown at commencement exercises on June 21, they will be defined not by the experience but by their response.
The fully in-person ceremony drew a large and engaged crowd to Crisafi Field to hear speeches from Class President Matthew DiVito, Superintendent of Schools Erica Forti, Mayor Joseph Carfora, State Representative Joseph Zullo (R-86), Board of Education Chair Michele DeLucia, Salutatorian Naiiya Patel, Valedictorian Ashley Lynch and Principal Vincent DeNuzzo. Assistant Principal Susan Harkins was the evening’s guest speaker.
Patel described the disruption she and her classmates faced last year and the lessons learned as they graduate.
“As juniors, we thought we were getting lucky, ending the school year early and getting our coronacation. We had no idea we’d still be dealing with the consequences of COVID-19 more than a year later,” she said. “From this loss, we have gained a greater appreciation of every moment we could have together and with those we could not be with.
Patel “We will never forget to seize the moment after this year.”
Despite the challenges, her outlook was bright: “The Class of 2021 can handle anything that life throws at us.”
Lynch listed some of the accomplishments of the multi-talented Class of 2021 and challenged her classmates to embrace their most outlandish childhood desires, stating, “Do it for the little you, who has been envisioning this very moment for the last 18 years. You made it.”
One of the most poignant momemnts of the ceremony came in Harkins’s speech to graduates, which was also her farewell speech to the community as she enters retirement after almost four decades in education.
“To all of my students and colleagues, past and present, I thank you for the time we have spent together, for the many laughs, the occasional tears, for all the years you have been by my side,” she said. “So Class of 2021, as we leave the halls of East Haven High School together, know that we will be Yellowjackets forever. I love you all and may God bless your lives.”
