Congratulations, athletes! - Garden City News

In this week’s issue we feature our annual Sports Wrap-up section, highlighting the young athletes in the community. 

As in most years, we are proud of the strong team spirit and athletic abilities of the athletes, but in this year it is especially important to note their success. Unlike “normal” years, this year the teams had to overcome a special set of obstacles, from shortened athletic seasons to having to follow Covid health protocols. It hasn’t been easy, but these kids took the obstacles in stride and found success.

In particular, several high school teams should be congratulated for winning championships this year!

 Congratulations to all the athletes, and a special thanks to those who contributed material for the special section, especially sports photographer Ed Rotondo, whose photos grace the front cover.

As the pandemic continues to recede in this area, and the summer is beginning, we hope that the Board of Trustees considers all sides in the question of whether to continue closing Seventh Street several nights a week. 

We are generally in favor of anything that helps the small business community thrive, although that has to be balanced against the needs of residents to be able to use the street, especially those who need to use the on-street handicapped parking spaces.
