MIDDLETOWN, NJ: The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) has recognized Middletown High School South's Molly Buthorn.
Buthorn, a senior was awarded the organization's Good Citizen Award and Scholarship. She was Buthorn also selected as New Jersey's overall female award winner. She will be recognized at the upcoming NJDAR Conference in April. The DAR Good Citizen Award was established to encourage and reward the qualities of a good citizen. Any public or private high school may nominate a candidate.
The essay portion of the contest differs from many other competitions in that the topic is not revealed until the beginning of the allotted time to write. So, the participants are not given much time to think about the essay and cannot seek guidance from others. So, in addition to transcripts and multiple letters of recommendation, candidates must submit an essay, the topic of which is not revealed until the beginning of a two-hour writing session.
The selection criteria for choosing a winner includes:
Student's record of dependability
Leadership
Service
Patriotism
