The 86-year-old Molineux hero and 1966 World Cup winner is being recognised as part of the New Year’s Honours list.

Flowers and Jimmy Greaves are being made MBEs, meaning every surviving member of that triumphant England squad has finally been honoured.

Ted Farmer, who played with Flowers at Wolves during the 1960s, said: “As a player, he was tremendous – a powerhouse who pushed the club forward and made the team tick.

“And as a man, he has always been wonderful. It’s a commendation for the whole of the 1960s team, really, as well. Ron managed Northampton and Telford, and he has his sports shop in Wolverhampton.

“He invited me down to Wembley for the FA Trophy final when he was managing Telford which was lovely. A great bloke.”

Flowers made 49 appearances and scored 10 times for the Three Lions while being part of Alf Ramsey’s famous group.

He also played more than 500 times for Wolves between 1952 and 1967, winning three First Division titles and an FA Cup.

After retiring, he opened a sports shop in Wolverhampton, on Queen Street, which is still trading.

Wolves’ all-time top scorer Steve Bull said: “I’ve been to many former players’ association dinners with Ron, and he’s a lovely, caring man. I think this is long overdue. Almost everyone else in the ‘66 squad had been recognised and Ron had gone under the radar, so I’m delighted for him.

“You can put him right in that same category as Billy Wright as a true Wolves legend.

“He is a top bloke and was a great footballer in his day. It’s people like him and Billy who really put Wolves on the map.”

Flowers is currently a vice-president at Wolves and the president of the Wolves Former Players’ Association (WFPA).

Club great and WFPA vice-chairman John Richards said: “Everyone connected with Wolves will be absolutely delighted with this news which is a richly-deserved honour for one of the club’s all-time greats.

“Ron was such a key part of that wonderful Wolves team which was so successful in the 1950s, as well as playing so many games at the very top for England, and he has always remained such a humble and down-to-earth personality.

“I am sure that Ron and his family will be extremely proud of this honour from the Queen, just as we are that he continues to serve as president of the former players’ association.”

Flowers is Wolves’ fifth-highest appearance maker of all time.

His grandson, Harry – who plays for National League North side Curzon Ashton – wrote on social media: “Hero, Legend, Idol, but more importantly Grandad.

“Unbelievably proud and can’t wait to be able to celebrate with him.”
