Crosby, ex-teammates congratulate Engelland on retirement - NHL.com

Deryk Engelland's retirement made some of the biggest names in hockey stop and offer their best.

Ex-teammates Sidney Crosby, Marc-Andre Fleury and many others recorded congratulations to the longtime NHL defenseman, who retired Tuesday after 11 NHL seasons.

"It was a lot of fun playing with you. Not so much fun playing against you while going to the front of the net," Crosby said in a video posted to Twitter. "I know how hard you worked. You put a lot into it. You were a great teammate, and I hope you enjoy retirement and congratulations."

Engelland spent his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames and Vegas Golden Knights. He was teammates with Crosby in Pittsburgh and Fleury with the Penguins and Golden Knights.

"It's pretty amazing what you you've done, what you've been through. You busted your butt off to get where you are now, and I'm really proud of you," Fleury said. "I always appreciate the goalie-friendly shots in practice, [and] the guys that you move in front of my net all those games. I always felt pretty secure back there and being one of the toughest guys I've played with also."

Aside from Crosby and Fleury, fellow ex-teammates and defensemen Mark Giordano, Brayden McNabb, Paul Martin and Nate Schmidt, forwards Ryan Reaves, Peyton Krebs and Matt Stajan and goalies Malcolm Subban and Allain Roy also sent their best, as well as former Flames coach Glen Gulutzan.

"Unbelievable career; unbelievable guy," Schmidt said. "You've been through the ringer having to sit next to me the last couple of years, but in all reality man that's awesome. Congratulations. … Hope the next chapter is awesome and all the best to you guys in the future."

Bill Foley also offered his own statement, welcoming Engelland to the front office as special assistant to the Golden Knights owner.

"Deryk Engelland epitomizes what it means to be a Golden Knight - a no-ego, selfless, hardworking player who has an unwavering commitment to protecting those who are unable to protect themselves," Foley said. "On behalf of the entire Vegas Golden Knights organization, we would like to congratulate Deryk on an outstanding career. He has made an indelible mark on our city, and we are excited for this next chapter as he stays with the Golden Knights family and continues the outstanding work he has done in our community."
