Today is graduation for Windsor High School. Monday is Memorial Day, which marks important events going on to include American Legion Post 109, who will host a Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony in conjunction with the town of Windsor at Lakeview Cemetery located at the southwest corner of Colo. 392 and Colo. 257. Thank you to all our veterans and active military. A special thanks and a prayer to all those who died for our freedoms; you are in God’s arms now.
While thinking of the Windsor High School Class of 2024, I am reminded of all the young people who I know personally that will graduate this year from high school or college in state and out of state. Kudos to all the graduates in our community and all young people who will be graduating and are planning their futures with such determination and zest. I am reminded of those persons I admire who show dedication, walking the walk not just talking the talk, practicing what you preach. Someone that comes to mind is President Ronald Reagan, who I believe had a combination of great strengths. He owned his beliefs and convictions regardless of popular vote. Another person who comes to mind is Mother Teresa, whose life was devoted to the poorest of the poor and whose life was a beacon of hope to millions of the world’s downtrodden. Mother Theresa worked in impossibly difficult conditions and by choice lived in near poverty herself. What makes an individual want to live that kind of life? She believed in what she was doing and was determined to live her life accordingly.
Pope John Paul was another such individual in my book. He was loved by all, not just Catholics. His absolute refusal to knuckle under to popular moral politics and his steadfast commitment to absolute standards of right and wrong define strength of conviction.
There are many people right here in Windsor and the surrounding areas that have strength of conviction. People who toss in their hats for the betterment of the community, adults and students alike. These individuals define the path of five strengths: conviction, persistence, mindfulness, concentration and discernment. Let’s talk about COVID heroes during the last few years. The physicians, nurses, firefighters, police and, yes, even the small business owners in our community and around our country who have contributed their effort to the pandemic.
Last but not least, I am reminded of the patients who come into my office for psychological treatment. Whether their presenting problem is smoking, weight loss, depression, anxiety or other concerns requiring individual or other forms of therapy, most of them are committed to getting better and living a healthier lifestyle. They are my real heroes. In the face of adversity they work to overcome obstacles and to reach their goals. This is never easy. I applaud all of them. The “strength of conviction,” I believe, is knowing who you are, what your capabilities are and what you stand for. It is staying true to this knowledge no matter what your situation is. The graduates of 2024 will face their own success and adversity as they forge into their future. They have reached their goals, and it is time to celebrate them!
