Earlier this year, the United Way of Central Oklahoma commemorated its 100th year of service. In its 100 years, it's had 12 executive leaders — 11 men and one woman. That woman is the current president and CEO, Debby Hampton. She announced earlier this year that she would retire after 13 years as the head of the agency.Hampton grew up in Del City and has spent close to 40 years in public and charitable service after graduating from the University of Oklahoma. Her service began as a mental health case worker, and she worked for the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits.Hampton spent 16 years with the Red Cross, four as CEO, and, of course, 13 years with the United Way. During her tenure, Hampton led teams that raised over $278 million, which has impacted thousands of families and individuals in our community. She and her team navigated natural disasters, including the 2013 tornadoes and a global pandemic that stretched the United Way's capacity and resources like never before.Hampton is known as a tenacious advocate for the United Way's partner agencies. She's also an innovator who launched the Wayfinders Innovation Grant Program, which funds new programs for partners. Hampton led the creation of Embrace OKC, a school-based program with Oklahoma City Public Schools to support academic, behavioral and mental health services for the district. If you talk to the board members and partner agencies, I think they would use the term "committed" as well — not only to United Way agencies but to communities all over Oklahoma.Hampton broke the glass ceiling as the first female to lead the United Way.
