Alabama lawmakers react to Rep. Mike Johnson's election as House Speaker - WVTM13 Birmingham

Republican congressman Mike Johnson of Louisiana has been elected House speaker. Republicans eagerly gave Johnson the gavel on Wednesday by a vote of 220-209, with a few absences.Rep. Robert Aderholt sent out a message on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying: "Congratulations to Mike Johnson, officially the 56th Speaker of the House!" Earlier in the day, he also posted: "I just cast the first vote for Mike Johnson!" In a statement, Rep. Aderholt added: “He will be a strong & unifying Speaker who will fight for our shared values. As a long-time warrior for conservatism, I know he will stand dedicated to our cause. There is much that must be accomplished in a short amount of time. Under his leadership, we will fund the government, secure the border, and ensure Israel has what it needs to defend itself from Hamas terrorists."Rep. Gary Palmer, who briefly also ran for speaker, weighed in on today's vote as well. In a message on X, he said, "Speaker Mike Johnson is a principled, unwavering conservative who will live out his faith in God as he serves the country. Republicans are united and ready to work for the American people."Rep. Mike Rogers also expressed his support on social media, saying, "Very excited to see my good friend and distinguished member of the 'Mike' caucus become Speaker of the House! Let's Geaux @RepMikeJohnson!"Earlier in the day, Rep. Terri Sewell, the state's lone Democratic member of Congress, posted on X, "Getting ready to vote for @RepJeffries for Speaker for the 19th time!"Senator Katie Britt also sent out this message on X: "Congratulations Speaker Johnson! The challenges ahead for our country are great, but Senate Republicans are ready to work with you to advance sensible solutions for the American people."Senator Tommy Tuberville also offered this message on social media: "Congratulations to Speaker @RepMikeJohnson. Mike is a principled conservative who has pledged to put America first. Now we can get back to the business of fighting for the American people."Johnson picked up an important nod of support ahead of the vote from Donald Trump. Johnson was the fourth candidate Republicans nominated to replace Kevin McCarthy. The Republican majority has been without a speaker for three weeks and is desperate to end the chaos and get back to work. Ahead of voting, Johnson said he felt “very good.” Far-right members refused to accept a more traditional speaker. Moderate conservatives didn’t want a hard-liner.
