We congratulate Kirsten Burkhart on her 20-year milestone as executive director of AIDS Resource.
Burkhart and AIDS Resource deserve congratulating: The organization is tireless in its efforts to our family, friends and neighbors afflicted with HIV, AIDS or other sexually transmitted infections.
The group, which was profiled along with Burkhart in the weekend edition of the Sun-Gazette, provides case management services and assistance with medical appointments, insurance, utilities, nutrition and food delivery. It provides STI testing and treatment and works to educate the community about safer sex.
In the words of Burkhart, the organization tries “to keep people as healthy as possible for as long as possible.”
Burkhart and the organization have worked hard for decades, during a time when both the medical community’s understanding of the disease and the public’s understanding of the disease has changed. Medical advances have been, in Burkhart’s words, “extraordinary.” As the National Institutes for Health reports, while HIV remains serious, the mortality rate for HIV in the past 20 years or so has plummeted.
As William Brangham, a reporter for PBS said, “HIV treatment has undoubtedly saved millions.”
What has been less encouraging is the public’s understanding. Burkhart shared her frustrations with the stigma surrounding the disease and said AIDS Resource also is working on educating the public and correcting misperceptions.
Based on the magnitude of hard work and effort with which AIDS Resource has pursued its other goals these past 20 years, we are sure — and also thankful — that AIDS Resource will work hard at informing the public of the advances in understanding and treating AIDS and other STIs.
