Letter from a retired editor: congratulations to the North Central Jets - Escanaba Daily Press

Congratulations to the North Central Jets for yet another state football championship.

What is in the water in Powers-Spalding-Hermansville? Must be something really special because the Jets have been so very special for so many years, in football, basketball and in golf with Bryson Mercier.

Outstanding stuff, beyond belief even.

What a truly dominating, spectacular football season.

The Jets outscored their 12 opponents (not counting a forfeit victory in a 13-0 season) by an unbelievable 700 points, which likely has never been done by anyone else anywhere. Allowing just 13 points for the season is also mind-boggling, as is their only so-called challenging game, a 42-0 victory.

The Jets have won 26 straight games over two seasons for the second time in their 8-player football history, matching what they did while winning state titles in 2015-16.

They were even more dominant, if that is possible, in basketball when they won a state record 84 straight games and three consecutive state championships in 2014-16 under coach Adam Mercier.

The MHSAA record book is full of North Central accomplishments in the state football finals, under the guidance of coaches Leo Gorzinski and Kevin Bellefeuil.

For instance, their 49-0 halftime lead against Colon Saturday is the biggest in state final 8-player history. Their 70 points against Portland (70-48 final score) in 2020 is the most in state finals annals, and their 63-0 conquest of Colon Saturday is No. 2.

I was fortunate to cover NCA’s 58-22 title game victory over Deckerville in 2016 for the Daily Press and never figured anyone would be so outstanding as Jason Whitens again.

After all, Whitens ran for a record 352 yards and tied teammate Bobby Kleiman’s 2015 record with six touchdowns.

The Jets’ Lucas Gorzinski has been almost as dominant, accounting for a record 455 total yards in 2020 when he scampered for 299 yards.

Gorzinski’s teammate, Jaden Walters, set another record Saturday with seven extra point conversion kicks.

It is beyond amazing that a tiny Class D school has won four state football titles in the last seven years, plus the three consecutive Class D state basketball titles.

As stated earlier, congratulations North Central Jets. Hope you can make it three straight next year.
