It may of ended sooner than we all hoped, but we are proud of the season the Westwood Patriots put together.
The Patriots fell in Saturday’s MHSAA Division 7 regional football championship to host Traverse City St. Francis, 48-20. But that doesn’t put a damper on the excitement this squad created in getting as far as it did.
It was the best season in school history — so far.
The Patriots, guided by head coach Scott Syrjala, lost just once during the regular season and mowed down the competition in the first rounds of the postseason. They played well against the Gladiators, last year’s state runner-up, but came up short.
Star running back Zach Carlson put it this way: “We knew that there were a couple teams throughout the year that got up on them, and we just had to withstand that punch from the second half. But we couldn’t do that today.”
They might have lost the contest but the Patriots proved to be winners in the support they received.
The writer covering the game noticed. James Cook,the senior sportswriter at the Traverse City Record-Eagle, wrote: “Westwood fans shaking change-laden milk jugs with Upper Peninsula stickers on the outside had a lot to cheer for early on.”
However, the support went much deeper than noise.
“I just want to say thank you to the community,” Syrjala said. “Once again for their support of our weight room. All the money that they donated in time and businesses that helped out. … We had tons of donations for this trip. This trip was expensive, renting buses and hotels. That’s expensive and our community stepped up and donated a lot of money.”
Congratulations to Coach Syrjala and his team. The Patriots are building a program that will have a chance to contend every year and that’s something for which the whole community deserves credit.
