It’s kind of hard to believe that Brayden Point is in his fifth NHL season already. It was just yesterday that he was a fresh-faced, 20-year-old rookie who skipped over the AHL right into the NHL. Now he’s a grizzled 24-year-old veteran with a Stanley Cup ring and 300 career points. Only 11 other Lightning players have done in franchise history, six of whom he is currently teammates with.
With a power play goal against Carolina on Monday night, Point hit the 300 point mark with 135 goals and 165 assists. He was the third-fastest Bolt to hit the record following Steven Stamkos (302 games) and Nikita Kucherov (337 games). That’s pretty impressive company for a third-round pick.
Out of his 2014 draft class he is the fourth player (and lowest drafted) to hit the 300 point mark. Leon Draisaitl (485), David Pastrnak (417), and Nickolaj Ehlers (302) are the only other ones that have gotten there so far.
Outside of 2018-19 when he racked up 20 goals and 15 assists on the power play, he’s done a lot of his scoring at even strength. Early in his career he didn’t see time on the first unit and even know, when Stamkos and Kucherov are in the line-up, Point is a secondary option with the man advantage. Just think of how many times Stamkos has finished off a shot set up by Hedman after a pass from Kuch? Point is out there causing disruption in the slot, but is often a decoy.
While Stamkos is known for his shooting skills and Kucherov for his passing, Point is kind of a jack of all trades. He has a good, but not great shot, and is good with the puck, but not a wizard. He is quicker on his skates than the other two and uses his speed to set up his offense, but is one of those players that just knows how to get to good spots to score.
He has one more season under his $6.75 bridge deal before we hit Point-pocalypse and a long drawn out summer of figuring out what he’s going to make on a long-term deal. He will be a RFA so the Lightning have a little bit of an upper hand, but expect it to be a rational negotiation that ends up with Point staying in a Lightning uniform for quite some time. Hopefully that means we’ll be celebrating, 400, 400, 600, and maybe 700 points in the future.

The Lightning out-Carolina’d the Hurricanes for most of the night and Alex Killorn recorded a goal, assist, and fight in the victory. Point had a power play goal and Yanni Gourde finished things off in overtime.
Canes Come Back to Earn a Point
Considering they were down 2-0 at one point, getting it to overtime was almost as good as a win for the Canes. The one point they picked up allowed them to stay in first place in the Central as they are now tied with Florida with 63 points. Tampa Bay is one behind with 62.

1997. He was drafted in 1997 and is still playing in the league. If he was a NHL arena he would be the 15th oldest one in the league. He’s been in the league longer than four teams, soon to be five. He outlasted the Atlanta Thrashers by 11 years and counting. Not a bad little career.
