YP’s Best of the Month Awards: Congratulations to our September winners - YP

Those of us at Young Post had a tough time choosing winners for our inaugural Best of the Month Awards because there were so many thoughtful letters and creative submissions. But after taking a thorough look at everything we’ve published in September, we are happy to announce the winners.

Best Letters

Zaina Shahid from Yew Chung International School impressed us with her letter about how ethnic minority groups should be treated in Hong Kong. This was a very personal letter, as she made clear at the beginning that she is Pakistani, and she wants the city to be a more inclusive place.

Ge Yueyang from United World College of South East Asia, also won Best Letter for her personal letter about China’s three-child policy. She opened up about how the news of her sister’s birth came as a relief for her, after being the only child in her family for eight years. But she explained why this policy change would not be enough to fix the pressure of the “one-child mindset”.

Best Face Off

Amaanat Rekhi from South Island School won Best Face Off for her argument explaining why celebrities should not be exempted from quarantine. She presented her reasoning clearly and effectively addressed counterpoints, making a persuasive argument that quarantine exemptions for celebrities overlooked the safety of everyone else.

Most Creative

Austin Leung Fong-ching from Stewards Pooi Kei College is without any doubt the winner of this award. A YP editor laughed so hard he almost fell off his chair reading Austin’s Top 10 submission about what he would do if his teacher promised to make one of his wishes come true.

Emily Ching Wing-yu from Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College is another winner because of her submission for our photo prompt page, Show Off. Impressively, she won with only two words.

In addition to the above-mentioned awards which we will be giving out every month, we have decided to give away two special awards this time:

Most Engaged School

Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College was a clear winner for Most Engaged School. In September alone, we published 20 letters and other submissions from this school. Keep it up!

Best Story

For this award, we expanded our search beyond September to acknowledge a junior reporter who wrote a beautiful story about a fashion show organised by students in Hong Kong to celebrate Asian pride. The author, Nicole Tan, was an active Team YP junior reporter, who recently graduated from Hong Kong International School and just started university. We wish her all the best on her new adventure!

Winners will each receive a certificate and a special YP notebook to encourage them in their writing journeys. We will contact winners about the prizes.

Keep an eye out for October’s winners which will be announced in November.

Congratulations!
