Snake Bytes 5/16: Congratulations - AZ Snake Pit

[D’backs.com] Escobar’s 2-HR, 7-RBI night powers D-backs - As the list of D-backs players on the injured list grows, manager Torey Lovullo is keeping a positive mindset. There are numerous young players getting opportunities to prove themselves and earn a place in the big leagues. This can be fun to watch, even if it doesn’t lead to immediate results. Don’t forget about the more experienced guys in Arizona’s lineup, though. They’re looking to make an impact, too, in the absence of some key contributors. Eduardo Escobar provided a reminder of that Saturday night, as he broke out with a pair of home runs and a career-high-tying seven RBIs to power the D-backs to an 11-4 win over the Nationals at Chase Field. Entering the night, Escobar was mired in a 1-for-34 slump over his previous 10 games.

[AZ Central] Eduardo Escobar hits 2 home runs as Diamondbacks finds life in win over Nationals - David Peralta hit his fourth home run of the season, Daulton Varsho, Josh Rojas and Peralta had two hits each and four Diamondbacks pitchers, including Seth Frankoff in his first major league start, held the Nationals to four runs on 10 hits a night after Washington totaled 17 runs on 22 hits. The Diamondbacks (18-22) placed four players on either the 10-day or 60-day injured list in the past two days. On Friday, it was Asdrubal Cabrera with a strained right hamstring. Before Saturday’s game, hot-hitting catcher Carson Kelly went on the 10-day list with a fractured big toe, and relievers J.B. Bukauskas and Chris Devenski were also added to the list of players who are with injuries that has grown to 10. “I feel like several of the veteran players led the way,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “There are some new names in our clubhouse. It’s a team full of guys that are trusting one another and going out and working hard and it was Eduardo’s turn to lead the way.”

[Arizona Sports] D-backs transfer Calhoun to 60-day IL; bring up Leyba, Lopez from Reno - The Arizona Diamondbacks made a plethora of roster moves on Saturday. The D-backs transferred outfielder Kole Calhoun to the 60-day injured list due to a strained left hamstring. Arizona also placed right-handed pitcher J.B. Bukauskas on the 10-day IL because of a right elbow flexor strain. In corresponding moves, the team has selected infielder Domingo Leyba and left-handed pitcher Joe Mantiply, and recalled RHP Yoan Lopez from the Triple-A Reno Aces. During his pregame media availability on Saturday, manager Torey Lovullo said that catcher Carson Kelly and right-handed pitcher Chris Devenski would also be heading to the injured list. The 26-year-old Kelly suffered a left great toe tuft fracture and has been placed on the 10-day IL retro to Friday, while Devenski was placed on the 60-day injured list due to a sprained right ulnar collateral ligament.

Around the League

[USA Today] Jarred Kelenic shines with three hits - including a homer - in second game with Seattle Mariners - Prized prospect Jarred Kelenic made his first major league hit memorable with a two-run homer and later added a pair of doubles, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 7-3 win over Cleveland on Friday night. After going hitless in his big league debut Thursday night, Kelenic brought the crowd to its feet with his first career long ball in the third inning. He stayed with an off-speed pitch from Aaron Civale, but still had the power to drive it 403 feet out to right-center field. The ball was clocked at 109.3 mph off the bat and Kelenic’s sprint around the bases seemed just as fast. He embraced fellow young Seattle star Kyle Lewis in the dugout with a bearhug and tipped his cap to the fans when their standing ovation didn’t stop.

[MLB.com] Seager fractures hand on HBP, will go on IL - The Dodgers have overcome an avalanche of injuries so far this season, but now they’re going to have to be without Corey Seager for an extended period of time, as X-rays showed the star shortstop suffered a fractured right hand in Saturday’s 7-0 win against the Marlins. The Dodgers didn’t give a timetable for Seager’s return, but it’ll certainly be an extended absence following the diagnosis. “I think that we’re all concerned about him and the extent of the injury,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “Obviously, you don’t want to lose any player for an extended period of time.”

[ESPN] Albert Pujols in agreement with Los Angeles Dodgers on major league deal, sources say - The deal, first reported by the Los Angeles Times, isn’t expected to become official until Monday, a source said. When it does, the Dodgers will pay Pujols only the prorated portion of the major league minimum salary for the rest of the season, roughly $420,000, a sum that will be subtracted from the $30 million salary that is being paid to him by the Los Angeles Angels. Pujols, in the last year of his 10-year, $240 million contract, was designated for assignment by the Angels on May 6 and was officially released after clearing waivers on Thursday. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts declined to comment on Pujols prior to Saturday’s game because the deal has not been officially announced.
