Re “Adoption puts couple in seventh heaven” (May 9):
Congratulations to Allyson Escobar on her timely front-page Mother’s Day article that literally took my breath away and made me want to cheer for Pam and Gary Willis and their commitment to these seven children whose parents had lost their lives in a tragic accident. As the former founding director of Orangewood Children’s Home, the OC emergency shelter for abused and neglected children, I know what it requires to take on a challenge like this. I viewed fist hand the trauma that literally thousands of children in our care experienced and I am well aware of the imperfections and strengths of the foster care system. But angels on Earth like the Willis family make a difference and continue to inspire me now at age 84, reaffirming my commitment to so many vulnerable children during my long professional career.

Electric vehicles will pollute more than gasoline or diesel vehicles
Re “Storage hubs hit by limits on smog” (May 8):
As usual ignorance causes us more problems than we already have. At the present time, when electricity is generated by burning something, coal, oil or gas, using electric vehicles will pollute more than gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles will. There are two reasons for this every time an electric vehicle stops, it must start again.
When it starts the motor efficiency is almost zero for two reasons. 1. The leakage inductance cannot limit the starting current because of the low frequency. 2. The low frequency also limits the magnetizing branch inductance so the load current is shunted. The unlimited starting current also is detrimental to the battery efficiency. If the battery is charged quickly as CARB has stupidly now permitted, the battery-charging efficiency can also approach zero. Now the pollution is at the power plant, which is much worse because it is concentrated at the power plant and not all over the roads traveled.

Armstrong Williams
Kudos for Armstrong William’s essay on race in America Sunday, May 9. I do not agree with much of what he wrote, but I appreciate his thoughtful tone and elegant style of writing.
