We knew almost two years ago that freshman senator Raphael Warnock would have to run again after he defeated incumbent Kelly Loeffler in the US Senate runoff election in January 2021. At the time Warnock was elected, most of us could have never imagined that when he ran for re-election he would be running against former University of Georgia football legend Herschel Walker. But we live and vote in Georgia; therefore, most of us have learned to expect the unexpected, particularly when it comes to politics.
When Warnock entered the political arena, he had no prior political experience. His occupation at the time was minister of one of our nation’s most well-known churches – Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church – where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was pastor until his assassination in 1968.
Walker had tremendous gridiron success while at UGA and began his professional football career in 1983 when he signed with the United States Football League’s New Jersey Generals. During Walker’s first year on the Generals’ roster, the team was sold to New York businessman Donald Trump. Walker later played in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants. While playing football, Walker also delved into the food service industry with Athens-based D’Lites fast food restaurants and later with Renaissance Man Food Services specializing in chicken processing and chicken products.
I can somewhat understand the transition from the pulpit to politics but still have problems understanding how and why one progresses from football and food to legislation; need we again be reminded that this is Georgia politics?
Speaking of politics in Georgia, Kantar Media has estimated that runoff election advertising spending totaled between $100 million and $125 million in Georgia media. Let that number sink in for a few moments. More than $100 million has been spent to convince Georgia voters to choose between a pastor and a football player to represent us.
Oddly, though, due to the quest for political power and influence in Washington, those millions of dollars obviously motivated a lot of voters to support candidates with little or no political experience as voter turnout was extremely high in all areas of the state.
Due to our press deadlines, this opinion piece was written without knowledge of who will represent Georgia in the United States Senate for possibly the next six years. Who won the election makes no difference to me, as neither gentleman would be my choice.
Even more odd than record-setting turnout to choose between a pastor and a former football star is that the only requirements to be a senator are a person must be more than 30 years old, must have been an American citizen for at least nine years and must live in the state he or she represents. In some states, even animal control officers are required to be licensed, but no experience is required to represent millions of American citizens. Ironically, there is doubt whether Walker’s primary residence is actually in Georgia or Texas.
The best news in this scenario is that we will no longer be subjected to the nonstop onslaught of attack advertising that we have been exposed to for the last six months.
To those of you who feel that the better man won, I offer my congratulations; to those who feel that you were forced to choose between the lesser of two undesirables, I offer heartfelt empathy and condolences.
For the first time in more than 40 years, my choice was to support neither candidate. I did not vote in the runoff election because I don’t believe that a pastor or a professional athlete is qualified to represent me and my fellow Georgians.
