Sandi Squicquero: Congratulations, 2022 graduates - Greeley Tribune

This past weekend as I was reading the weekend papers I couldn’t help but think about graduations and all of the events ongoing in our community, starting with graduation and ending the Memorial Day weekend.

While thinking of the Windsor High School Class of 2022,  I thought of the words “strength of conviction.”  Perhaps my subconscious was giving my conscious mind a message and it made me proud to read about the people in our community who work to make a difference.

Kudos to all the graduates in our community, young people who will be graduating and are planning their futures with determination .

In defining “strength of conviction,” one definition that I like is : One filled with power and optimism arising from the strength of character and knowledge of self. Words like conviction, generous heart and fair minded also fit the bill.

This definition is not as easy to uphold as it sounds.  Showing dedication, walking the walk , not just talking the talk, practicing what you preach.

Someone that comes to mind is President Ronald Reagan, who I believe had a combination of great strengths.  He owned his beliefs and convictions regardless of popular vote.

Another person is Mother Theresa, whose life was devoted to the poorest of the poor and whose life was a beacon of hope to millions of the worlds downtrodden. Mother Theresa worked in impossibly difficult conditions and lived in near poverty herself.

What makes an individual want to live that kind of life?  She believed in what she was doing and was determined to live her life accordingly.

Pope John Paul was another such individual in my book. He was loved by all, not just Catholics.  His absolute refusal to knuckle under to popular moral politics and his steadfast commitment to absolute standards of right and wrong define strength of conviction.

There are many people right here in Windsor and the surrounding areas that have strength of conviction.  People who work for the betterment of the community, adults and students alike.

These individuals define the path of five strengths: conviction, persistence, mindfulness, concentration and discernment.

Let’s talk about COVID hero’s during the past few years. The physicians, nurses, firefighters, police and, yes, the small business owners in our community and around our country who have contributed to our communities during the pandemic.

Many of these folks have worked long hours at great personal risk to help keep us safe or keep our families fed. Quite a few have gone under businesswise, often losing their life savings in the process.

All of these individuals are heroes whether wearing a gun or handling fire hose, stethoscopes, spatulas or hair dryers. They tried their best under awful conditions to help normalize our lives in an age of crisis and fear.

Bless them all. Bless these heroes.

Last but not least, I am reminded of the patients who come into my office for psychological  treatment.  Whether their presenting problem is smoking, weight loss, depression, anxiety or other concerns requiring individual or other forms of therapy, most of them committed to getting better and living a healthier lifestyle.

They are my real heroes.  In the face of adversity they work to overcome obstacles and to reach their goals.

I applaud all of them.  The “strength of conviction,” I believe, is knowing who you are, what your capabilities are and what you stand for. It is staying true to this knowledge no matter what your situation is.

The graduates of 2022 will face their own success and adversity as they forge onto their future . They have reached their goals and it is time to CELEBRATE THEM!
