Editorial: Congratulations EPHS Seniors and families - Estes Park Trail-Gazette

The class of 2022 will be remembered for many accomplishments not the least of which will be as the bounce-back Class that was ‘somewhat’ post-COVID normal. Fortunately, you were able to enjoy your senior year on campus with limited restrictions unlike the two classes before you. Congratulations as this accomplishment of graduating from High School will be one of the biggest and game-changing events in your life. To the parents and loved ones, congratulations on getting your senior to this pivotal point of life in one piece. Over the past few years, it has not been easy so enjoy and be proud!

For many of you, it is the start of a chance to spread your wings and grow whether your plans include going to college, joining the military, or starting your work career. Next year, regardless of your choice, will not be like your last 12.

The world has changed quite a bit over the last two years and much of the change has not been positive. It seems that many of us have lost our sense of community and well-being for our fellow man. Every day we see and hear about cries of hate and senseless violence all in the name of selfish intent. It is our hope that you — being the new group of adults entering our world — will remember to think about your fellow humans first, and know that by giving first you will receive back in abundance. The world needs young happy, healthy blood to reinvigorate our faith in human beings again.

You ask, how can I do anything about the world as it is? To that I say be happy, enjoy every day, and embrace every moment as it will mean something in years to come. Embrace the meeting of someone new and different, incorporate their positive teachings into your life and share some with them. Smile at folks when you walk past them and remember to lend a hand when one is needed, not just when asked. Please know these simple acts of kindness will multiply and make the world a better place.

This new world of yours will be fun and scary. The world is really your oyster and you can make it exactly what you want it to be. Hard work always pays off. Learn to pay your dues on your way up. Remember to reach back to help someone behind you. Enjoy falling in love and try to find the lessons in the heartbreak.

Every terrible date, every failed relationship, and every mistake you make will eventually lead you to who and where you need to be to meet the person who will change your life and you will be thankful for all the hard times that led you to this person who you can now dance on the grand stages of life with. Never forget those that got you to this point with the love they gave you … pay it forward.

In a commencement speech to graduates of Southern Connecticut State University this week, SCSU President Joe Bertolino told the graduates that “the Class of 2022 will truly go down in history for its resilience, sacrifice, and determination under the most difficult of circumstances.”

Our local high school students have shown their mettle during these trying times, too. Resilience, sacrifice and determination are qualities that will serve the Estes Park High School graduates well in the future.

Class of 2022, congratulations! We hope our 8-page commemorative section on all of you will be something you keep and enjoy.
