From The Tribune Staff Reports
TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville Downtown Merchants Association (TDMA) are local business owners committed to being small business advocates for our community. Their mission statement is, “To support and improve the Trussville downtown business district by promoting the area through events, marketing, and collaboration with other stakeholders.”
TDMA enjoys hosting successful events such as the Back to School Art Scavenger Hunt that took place on August 21. The kids had so much fun traveling to the different businesses, including Sky Bear Confections, Shirley’s Florists, Cookie Dough Magic, DeDe’s Book Rack partnered with EW Motion Therapy, Carroll Pharmacy, Trussville Antiques & Interiors, Amari Curb Market, and the Classic Car & Garage Museum partnered with Whistle Stop Garden Shop, looking for clues at each stop to bring them to their next location. In the end, they had the option to enter our contest by creating their own Trussville artwork, including the seven landmarks they found on their clues.
The landmarks included:
- The Trussville Sign
- The TED aka Trussville Entertainment District
- The “Green Bridge” aka the Civitan Bridge
- The Gazebo in Civitan Park
- The Christmas tree on the mall
- The READ mural at the Trussville Library
- The new clock
The contest participants had their artwork displayed at the Trussville Art Walk at the 2021 City Fest on September 11. The top five had ribbons displayed with their art showing their achievements. TMDA is proud of all its participants who made such beautiful creative art pieces for their community to enjoy. TMDA’s top five winners were awarded a certificate, a ribbon, a gift card to Michael’s, and their acknowledgment in the Trussville Tribune. The top five were picked by the most liked photos of the artwork on our Facebook event page.
The winners are as follows:
- 1st place – Ivy Haynes with 187 votes
- 2nd place – Abbott Deilbert with 142 votes
- 3rd place – Noah Deilbert with 127 votes
- 4th place – Madelyn Moore with 121 votes
- 5th place – Olivia Popham with 110 votes
When asked how they felt about participating and winning the event?
“I was excited and happy,” Haynes said.
“I was surprised that I won. I was excited. I liked seeing all of the businesses,” Abbott Deilbert said.
“I felt excited and surprised because other people had really good drawings when my mom showed me,” Noah Deilbert said.
“My mom made me do it, but happy I won,” Moore said.
“Fun, worked hard, and glad I won,” Popham said.
TMDA is grateful to all those who participated in the event and the contest. About 75 kids participated in the scavenger hunt, gathering fun surprises along the way for both kids and parents. It was such a success for both the customers and the business owners that TMDA looks forward to growing this event next year.
The TDMA works hard on these events to bring people into our businesses that may have otherwise never visited before, build new relationships, become new resources for people to shop, eat, or conduct business with, and ultimately have fun in our downtown district.
TMDA is excited about an upcoming event to give their customers another opportunity to explore what Trussville has to offer. Like the Scavenger Hunt,
where you travel to different locations, they will be having an October event called the Scarecrow Stroll, except this one you can do on your own time within a week. Each of the participating merchants will be decorating a scarecrow to represent their business. So you might see scarecrows dressed up as all sorts of things relating to their business name or what they sell, you name it! Our local merchants are excited to get creative! You will see scarecrows popping up throughout October, but the main event will be the week of the Trussville Witches Ride, October 17 – 23. It will be a week-long event where you can take “Scarecrow Selfies” with a special hashtag that you will find on the Trussville Downtown event page. Each picture posted in our contest with the hashtag will be entered to win a gift basket full of gift cards from local merchants and $1 donated to the Trussville Witches Ride fundraiser for Nolan Trowbridge.
This event is another great opportunity to have fun while supporting our community, local businesses, and a local Trussville family with a 7-year-old son battling cancer. You can go to the Trussville Witches Ride Facebook or Instagram page to learn more about the fundraiser. The last day to get your “Scarecrow Selfies” in will be on October 23, which is the day of the exciting TVL Witches Ride taking place at Cahaba Elementary and ending at Ferus with an 80’s dance party. This will be a fun day in Trussville with witches and scarecrows, and who knows, maybe lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Come join us.
