'Congratulations' India, Elon Musk hails Isro's successful test of Gaganyaan rocket engine - Times of India

NEW DELHI: SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has congratulated India for successfully conducting the third long-duration “hot test” of the Vikas engine for its human-rated GSLV MkIII vehicle, a key component of India’s maiden human spaceflight ‘Gaganyaan’ mission that will take three Indian gagannauts to space.
Replying to an Isro tweet on the key engine test, Musk on Thursday tweeted, “Congratulations!” with India's tricolour emoticon. Despite being a rival, Musk had earlier too hailed Isro’s big efforts on the space front. When the Indian space agency made a world record by launching 104 satellites at one go in February 2017, Musk had tweeted, “Yeah, awesome achievement by ISRO. Very impressive!” Last year, Isro too praised SpaceX when it launched Nasa astronauts into Earth's orbit aboard its Falcon 9 rocket for the first time by tweeting, “Congratulations to NASA and SpaceX for the historic first launch of the manned mission after 2011. Great job !”

SpaceX is now worth $74 billion and holds over 60% share of the $3.6 billion global commercial satellite launch market. On the other hand, Isro has less than 3% of the global market share but it hopes to increase its revenue and share by unveiling in near future its mini-PSLV rocket (SSLV), which has been developed primarily for commercial satellite launches.
On Wednesday, Isro successfully conducted the third long-duration hot test of the liquid propellant Vikas engine for the core L110 liquid stage, as part of the engine qualification requirements for the Gaganyaan programme. The engine was fired for a duration of 240 seconds at the engine test facility of Isro Propulsion Complex (IPRC), Mahendragiri, in Tamil Nadu. The performance of the engine met the test objectives and the engine parameters were closely matching with the predictions during the entire duration of the test, a statement from Isro said. With the Covid pandemic delaying the launch of the first two unmanned Gaganyaan mission before the final manned mission, Isro is now racing against time to test-launch the first unmanned mission by December this year.
The pandemic has also delayed several satellite launches this year. Even the launch of the first new-generation geo satellite Gisat-1 has been postponed several times. While speculation is rife that Isro may launch it in mid-August, Isro chief K Sivan told TOI that “no final decision has been taken till now though the discussion has been on”.
