Each weekday this season, BlueJackets.com will post CBJ Today, a look at news, notes, analysis and fun stuff from around the Blue Jackets world. It's everything you need to know if you're a fan going into the day.
The Daily Buzz
After two games in the last three days -- and six in the last nine -- the Blue Jackets are enjoying a much-deserved day off after the squad's milestone-laden 4-3 win over the Stars last night improved the record to 5-4-3. Columbus will be back at it with a practice tomorrow before a Super Bowl Sunday afternoon game vs. Carolina in Nationwide Arena.
Papa Nash
While there were a lot of memorable moments on the ice last night -- Cam Atkinson's 200th goal, first-ever CBJ goals for a guy who dreamed of playing for the team (Jack Roslovic) and the team's high-profile trade acquisition (Patrik Laine), Seth Jones' 200th assist -- the biggest moment of the past few days came away from the rink.
A hearty congratulations to Riley Nash and his wife, Clare, who welcomed their first son, Rhett, into the world on Tuesday. Nash missed the team's game that night vs. Dallas but was back at practice Wednesday -- a hearty bunch of stick taps from his teammates greeted him -- and played last night.
Nash spoke to the media about the new addition to the family after morning skate Thursday.
"It was really cool," he said of becoming a dad. "It was a little bit of a long process. Once we got there, we kind of expected things to progress pretty quickly, but he made us wait a little bit longer than we expected. But there's nothing really to describe that feeling of holding your own child for the first time. It's pretty crazy. The whole experience was really cool. Each day gets better and better."
Nash said he went on the team's road trip for games last Friday and Sunday against Chicago expecting to return home for Rhett's birth, so things worked out from that perspective. He has some teammates who are fathers he can lean on for advice if he needs it -- Nick Foligno, Cam Atkinson, David Savard, Gus Nyquist, Mikko Koivu and Mikhail Grigorenko are all dads -- and said he's already gaining the life changing perspective any new parent discovers.
"Definitely," he said. "I'm no longer thinking about what I need to do or just little things during the day that I'm worried about myself. Now it's just all, 'What can I do to help this little guy? How is he feeling? Is something irritating him? How can I make him more comfortable?' It kind of does a complete 180. It's pretty cool."
Hockey, of course, is known for its family legacies, so can Rhett expect to lace up the skates as he gets older?
"I hope so," Nash said before adding with a smile, "or a warm-weather sport."
Hockey Fights Cancer
If you caught any of the game coverage last night, you probably saw the lavender-accented warmups the Blue Jackets wore for Hockey Fights Cancer night, and don't forget those are up for auction! If you want to get in on the action, visit cbjauction.givesmart.com. There, you can also purchase some of the CBJ Hats for Heroes hats, a great program now in its 20th year of providing inspiration to pediatric cancer patients as well as funds for research.
As I wrote yesterday, it wasn't quite the same in an empty building, but there were still plenty of ways to celebrate. Thanks to everyone for the kind words about yesterday's piece, and if you're still interested in how the Blue Jackets have made a difference over two decades when it comes to pediatric cancer, the following video is worth your time.

Laine Scores
Lost in all the milestones last night was the first CBJ goal for Patrik Laine, a play in which he didn't give up on the action, outbattling the Stars to get a puck on his stick in a scoring area and putting it past Dallas goalie Anton Khudobin.

That all earned Laine a hearty pat on the back from John Tortorella, who clearly has enjoyed coaching his new winger so far.
Tortorella also expects more from Laine as he gets more and more comfortable.
"There's effort in his game," the head coach said. "He's tried to do too much, and I think that's just how he's made. I think that's why he's one of the best goal scorers in the league because he wants to push the limits as far as what he's going to do. The big thing for him and you can tell, conditioning is something that's going to take a little time. We have very little practice time, and I'm trying to give him as much ice as I can during the game to try to help him with that.
"But I don't think we're going to have a problem as far as his work habits. Everybody I've talked to speaks very highly of him as far as that is concerned."
