CONGRATULATIONS TO MAGEE TROJAN BAND
It seems that people are quick to criticize schools today for a myriad of reasons. What gets lost in all this is the many administrators, teachers, coaches and students who are working hard to achieve great results. If you take time to pull back the curtain and look for the positive, you would see students accomplishing amazing things in the Magee Schools. There are also teams and groups that badly want to achieve great things. One such group is the Magee Trojan Band.
It would be easy for this group to complain and quit after dealing with so many setbacks over the past several years. Magee welcomed Nathan Lucky late in the summer as their new band director. It was the third director in three years for the high school. Due to a copyright issue, Mr. Lucky had the daunting task to find a new show right before band camp. The band would then miss a week of camp due to Covid, another week when school was quarantined and then the monsoon rains of August and September would hit. This would be difficult for a seasoned group and this 2022-23 edition of the Trojan Band is very young. Band competitions begin early October with State Evaluation on October 8th this year. That did not give this group much time to memorize music and get a show on the field. They rolled up their sleeves working hours after school and met 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. most every day during their fall break. They didn’t make all 1s at state contest, but they gave it their all to represent their city, school and families.
Drum Major, Gerson Martinez, would make 1s at both the Copiah Marching Festival and State Evaluation in Pearl. The very young drum line made a 2 at Copiah, but worked hard to earn a 1 at State Festival the next week. The Color Guard was tremendous this year and earned a high 1 at Copiah, but their score dropped at State Festival. The band would earn overall 2s at both festivals. If you watched their show this past Friday night, then you would know the sense of satisfaction from these students. This past Saturday, you would also see the tears from young people that desperately wanted to earn a superior rating. Contrary to some opinions, students still care and they need support from the community.
Band is a very important activity in our county schools. It teaches discipline and teamwork that will benefit long after high school. We do want to congratulate Mendenhall Band for their all-superior ratings and hope they bring home the 4A State Championship. Mark Hudson has done an incredible job over the past decade and more helping the Tiger Pride Marching Band become perineal contenders for a state championship.
Magee Band has also had much success in the past and they want to get back to earning the top ratings. Mr. Lucky and Middle School Director, Brad Sumrall, would appreciate your help. Encourage your child to be a part of the band program and stick with it. Give of your time and financial support when there is an opportunity.
Magee Trojan Band, we are proud of you!
